Spray Foam Board Foot Calculator

Enter the area you are covering and the spray depth, and this tool gives you the board feet and roughly how many sets of foam you will need. A board foot is one square foot at one inch deep, so board feet equal area times depth.

Board feet = area × depth. Set estimates use typical yields (4,000 bf closed-cell, 16,000 bf open-cell) and will vary with product, temperature, and waste. Always confirm against your own job data before ordering.

How to use this calculator

Put in the square footage you are spraying and the depth in inches. Pick closed-cell or open-cell. The calculator multiplies area by depth to get board feet, then divides by the typical yield for that foam type to estimate sets. For example, 1,500 square feet of wall at 2 inches of closed-cell is 3,000 board feet, or about three-quarters of a set.

Closed-cell vs open-cell yields

The big difference between the two foams is how far a set goes. A set of closed-cell typically yields around 4,000 board feet. A set of open-cell yields around 16,000 board feet, because it expands more and is far less dense. That is why the same square footage can need four times as many sets in closed-cell as in open-cell. These are planning numbers. Your real yield depends on the product you run, the temperature of the drums and the substrate, your gun and pump, and how much waste you take. The contractors who bid accurately are the ones who track their actual yield per set over time and adjust.

Why accurate board-foot math matters

Board feet are the foundation of a spray foam bid. Underestimate and you eat the cost of an extra set or run short on the job. Overestimate and your price is too high and you lose the bid. Getting the volume right is step one. Pricing it with the right material cost and margin is step two, and our spray foam pricing calculator handles that part.

Questions about board feet

What is a board foot of spray foam?

A board foot is one square foot sprayed to a depth of one inch. So 1,000 square feet at 3 inches is 3,000 board feet. It is the standard way to measure spray foam volume and how foam is sold and bid.

How many board feet are in a set of spray foam?

A set (the A and B drums) typically yields around 4,000 board feet of closed-cell foam or around 16,000 board feet of open-cell. Real yield varies with the product, ambient and substrate temperature, and waste, so treat these as planning numbers and confirm against your own job history.

How do I calculate how much spray foam I need?

Multiply the area you are covering (in square feet) by the depth (in inches) to get board feet. Then divide board feet by the yield per set for your foam type to estimate the number of sets. This calculator does both for you.

Why does closed-cell need more sets than open-cell?

Open-cell foam expands far more and is less dense, so one set covers a lot more board feet. Closed-cell is denser and expands less, so you get fewer board feet per set and need more sets for the same board footage.
